Vitarka           Go back

Vitarka or savitarka describes the nature of consciousness in the first stage of samprajnata-samadhi. Vitarka is occasionally translated as “argumentative” or “deliberation,” presumably describing the tendency of consciousness to dialogue, so to speak, with the object of its meditation. At this stage the meditator’s mind is fully identified with the object of meditation in such a way that the object is grasped in its “essential wholeness,” including: the object itself, the notion, and the word. In this state the meditator grasps not only the object’s wholeness, but also the object’s life as it extends through time.
