We are not just a discreet entity but we carry the whole, the totality of the universe in us potentially. And that’s what one means by God-consciousness. And what the dervishes are doing is to get more and more into the consciousness of the divinity of their being. And, of course, that will give them authority. It will give you authority. And fulfill your purpose in life. It’s not ego, no it's, let’s say my father’s description of the ego is a false sense of who we are. For one thing it is part of our defense system because it says, “So far, no further.” There are boundaries. That’s the ego. And if you didn’t have an ego people would take advantage of you. On the other hand it is based upon one’s self-esteem. And one’s notion of one’s self is, of course, limited by one’s self-esteem. So, I mean, one’s self-esteem is limited by one’s notion of one's self, as I said.
See there’s a difference between affirming one’s ego power and affirming the divine power in one’s being. And that is perhaps the clue to spirituality. That’s probably the best definition of spirituality. And you find it, the best explanation of this would be, illustration of this would be, Christ sitting in front of Pilate in judgement. Pilate had behind him the whole army of the Romans, all the power in the world, in those days. And Christ was there without any worldly power and Pilate didn’t know how to deal with him. He thought, “Well, I don’t know. I wash my hands.” And so the reason was because he was, Pilate found himself in the presence of someone who had an authority that he himself didn’t have. And it was the authority because he was conscious of the divinity of his being.
