Mysticism

The word nirvana (Sanskrit) has many literal meanings including, to extinguish, to blow out, cessation, annihilation. In yoga and Buddhism this notion finds expression as it relates to the identity. Nirvana is the state attained when there is an absolute annihilation of any sense of personal self. Once constructs of identity have been extinguished, one is liberated from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, and dwells in the enlightened state achieved by the Buddha, nirvana.
